Losing inspiration and interest

Wed Oct 28, 2009, 1:49 PM
I've been so bored for months. So much of my time wasted because I don't know what to do.

I know have done a few pictures over the months, but it's just a chore for me, I don't get anything out of it anymore.

I just want something to do, something that will get results. I'm a person who's not satisfied with being a follower. I want to be the creator of something that gains followers. A comic, animation series, videogame or even just a website.

I don't have the patience to do anything on my own, and I lack ideas anyways. My projects fail because either there's too much to do before seeing any results or I can't get ideas for the project.

When I'm able to organize something, there just aren't enough people with the talent who can help me, I always have to work alone. The work of five or six people placed onto me. I don't mean to sound egotistical, but I always feel I'm the only one who knows enough of what I'm working on and I can't trust other people with it, which is why it's difficult to pass work to other people even if I manage to get somebody to agree to help.

I still have an art trade to finish, I haven't forgotten and I won't forget. When I have the energy to get up and draw again I'll do it...

A video game is a huge undertaking, an animation still a large one. Typical development costs on a video game can exceed five million dollars, and most programmers are paid in the 65-85 thousand a year range.

I know that at some point in time, even if I just write a book, I'll have to entrust Garuvul to others. ( Editors, critics, etc. )

Other people don't share your artistic vision exactly as you see it. Let go of the perfectionism on everything you can, or your ideas will never get off the drawing board.

A videogame doesn't take as much work as you think. Animations neither. That's why you can find both around the internet.

I could go and program something like a simple puzzle game or even a basic platform game engine within a week. I just don't do it because I have no ideas for on.
The reason I don't animate is a lack of patience and the fact that there aren't ideas that keep me interested long enough to keep working on it.

I think what you need to do is stop deliberately trying to make images. Instead just look at things you like, whether they're related to art or not, anything that interests you. And I think in time something will hit you and you'll get that inspiration and interest back again.
Remember you got into this for a reason, all artists need a bit of a refill sometimes.

You could program a very basic game using a framework in a week, yes, but if you were to do something 3 dimensional or completely on your own, you'd spend much longer than that.

If we're talking a puzzle game, or a maze game, I've already made a 3D one in blender, I've also made a very basic platformer. No one would want to play them though.

Something that sells for 5 bucks on steam takes a whole lot of work.

I'm just fine with two-dimensional games. And I know what it takes to make a good game. The programming is the least difficult part.

My problem is getting good ideas and details on how to make the game.

I'm just not really into it. I need a project that would inspire me.
I'll think about it some other time.

I had an RPG engine halfway done (2D sky view), but I didn't have much of an idea of what the game would be about.
It was a lot of work and it was going to be a while before I got any results so I just got tired of it and stopped.

I need a project that I'd be inspired to finish. Something that I really want to see finished enough to work on it.

For me, Garuvul is what drives me to learn CGI, and it's what I'm writing about.

I think you may be ahead of yourself looking at the game engine or the animation. Start with the story. First, think of what you want it to be about. Is it about a specific character? A world? A society? A specific event? A series of events?

Then think of what type it's going to be. Really with writing it's more of what the emphasis will be on. Violence, romance, adventure, discovery, etc.

Now you're at the beginnings of a story. Make your characters, have them interact in your head. Mentally put them in bizzare situations and have them react based on your interpretation of their personality and background.

Then you just pick the setting, and let 'em loose in it. Eventually you'll have something worth making into a game.
